Antibiotics are sometimes an indispensable part of dental treatment – their use can be part of the perioperative care of the patient, also concerning distant infections, as well as the treatment of diagnosed infections of various types that originate precisely in the oral cavity. Thus, there are situations in which the administration of an antibiotic to a dental patient is as justified as possible.

On the other hand, the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance is becoming a very serious public health problem. Nearly 700,000 people die each year from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to a report commissioned by the UK government and the Wellcome Trust. people. If this is not brought under control, in 2050. The number will rise to 10 million.

Dentists are unfortunately also responsible for the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance. As the Polish Dental Society noted in its official recommendations, antibiotics in dentistry are overused, so each time before administering them to a patient, the balance of potential benefits and risks of their use should be considered.
